Be Informed, but Not Consumed

As if there wasn’t enough things to distract us this year, earlier this week Oprah “the Queen” of TV, dropped an exclusive interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Now, I’ve never been all that interested in the Royal Family, but I would NEVER miss an Oprah exclusive interview!

So like many other Americans, I tuned in for this interview and honey…….

Let’s just say they spilled some tea!

I was prepared that there would be talk about the interview the morning after, but I didn’t expect to find myself going down of spiral of what all the Royal experts were saying about it and what this meant for the monarchy.

I’m pretty spent the entire morning on Facebook getting my friends’ reactions and then a few more on Youtube watching even more “exclusive” footage from the interview.

I was entirely consumed y’all!

And let me repeat, I’ve never been all that interested in the Royal Family! Like I couldn’t even really tell William and Harry apart until a few years ago! That’s how uninterested I was!

But I let the drama of this interview totally take me in and before I knew it half a day had passed.

How sad is that, but I know that I’m not alone.

How many hours have you spent totally engrossed in a news cycle this week? Wether you were looking for COVID vaccine details or trying to keep up with ever-changing restrictions in your area. Or just googling what other moms are saying about going from in-person to remote learning?

We all get consumed at some point when our intention was to only be informed.

It’s ok to search for information, but being totally consumed is another story.

So here are a few tips to avoid being totally consumed by the 24-hour news cycle that we’ve all become accustomed to:

  • Decide what’s most important to you right now. Get clear about what you most need to know at this particular moment in time.

  • Pick just one. Just one blog post, article or news story that you’ll engage with on the topic.

  • Give yourself a time limit. It can be easy to get stuck in a news loop, but give yourself a set time that you’re going to choose to get informed for the day and MOVE ON.
